Jobs

Formal job coverage dipped in the pandemic year and has only partly recovered

On the Periodic Labour Force Survey, the share of all workers in regular wage or salaried jobs with any social security was 11.5% in 2017-18, 11.4% in 2018-19 and 10.5% in 2019-20. It fell to 9.7% in the pandemic year 2020-21, rose to 10.1% in 2021-22, fell to 9.6% in 2022-23 and was 10.1% in 2023-24. The survey begins in 2017-18, so it cannot show what happened to this share in the demonetisation and GST years before it.

What follows. The share has not returned to its 2017-18 level in any later year of the survey.
