Press freedom and statistical suppression move in lockstep

The Pearson correlation between India's annual SSI and inverse press freedom rank is ~0.92 over 2014-2026. Both worsen together. The mechanism is plausible — pressure on independent statistics and pressure on independent press serve a similar function.

The decline in two ostensibly separate institutions is empirically a single phenomenon.
