India and Turkey rank lowest of the five peer countries on press freedom
RSF ranks for 2026: India 157, Turkey 163, Hungary 74, Brazil 52, South Africa 21. In 2014 they were India 140, Turkey 154, Hungary 64, Brazil 111 and South Africa 42. India, Turkey and Hungary fell. Brazil rose 59 places, the largest improvement of the five, and South Africa rose 21.
What follows. On press freedom India now ranks close to Turkey and far below Brazil and South Africa, both of which improved over the period.
