The Home Ministry's count of communal incidents stops in 2017

The Ministry of Home Affairs counted 677 communal incidents in 2004, a peak of 943 in 2008 and 823 in 2013 (MHA reply to an RTI application, reported by The Wire). Its replies to the Lok Sabha give 644 incidents in 2014, 751 in 2015, 703 in 2016 and 822 in 2017, when 111 people were killed. The yearly count averaged about 748 over 2004-2013 and 730 over 2014-2017. The ministry has not published a comparable national count for any year after 2017, so the series cannot show what happened since.

What follows. On the ministry's own count, communal incidents in 2014-2017 were close to the UPA-decade level. The record after 2017 is missing.
