India has not counted its population since 2011

The last Indian census was taken in 2011. The 2021 census was postponed in 2020 with no new date. Houselisting now runs from April to September 2026 and population enumeration is notified for February 2027 (Ministry of Home Affairs). Until that count is published, population figures used for ration cards, electoral rolls and survey sample frames rest on the 2011 count and projections from it.

What follows. By the time the 2027 enumeration is complete, sixteen years will have passed between counts.
